Research vessel BIOS 2
BIOS 2
The Brodarski Institute, a Croatian institute of maritime technologies, has recently designed BIOS 2 - a new research ship for the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split.
The main activities of BIOS 2 include fisheries research, monitoring of the seabed and sea soil, and exploration of the Adriatic Sea, to a depth of 1000m.
The vessel is equipped with sophisticated technology and modern laboratories for sea life research, as well as for oceanographic measurements and gathering of data that is directly forwarded to the Institute database. BIOS 2 also carries a weather station onboard and is equipped with an acoustic sea current profiler, navigation system, computer network with Internet access, probes for fisheries hydro-acoustic research and measurements up to a depth of 1000m, hydraulic winches for sampling, cranes, refrigerating chamber and icebox for storing the samples.
BIOS 2 can accommodate 17 researchers in one three-berth and seven two-berth cabins, and six crew members in two two-berth and three single-berth cabins.
All laboratories are equipped for receiving GPS navigational data in NMEA standard, by computer LAN network.
BIOS 2 was built at the BSO shipyard in Split, Croatia.
