Rapp Hydema’s electric motor

The Rapp liquid-cooled electric motor is a first-of-its-kind design, to be used for powering winches or other machinery in demanding applications offshore and within the marine industry in general, says manufacturer Rapp Hydema.

This is an asynchronous electric induction motor, specially designed for heavy duty drives, i.e. as a winch drive motor. A cooling fluid is circulated through the rotating parts and internal windings, giving optimal cooling characteristic, and full control of the temperature of the internal parts. This gives the motor a unique and outstanding performance at low speed and high torque duty, with a power rating up to 2.5 times the normal rated output, in continuous operation.

The company says that the motor has significantly less weight and a smaller frame size than a standard air-cooled motor with the same rated power.
