Pressure on the dike - offshore and onshore. Pieter Tesch reports - The Dutch seafood industry is battling on a number of fronts. The flatfish sector is in crisis and nearly a third of beam trawler owners have applied to scrap their vessels. The fuel crisis has hit not only them but also the pelagic sector which is now controlled by a small group of interests with big vessels, though profits are stable. Ecologists have got an armlock on the small but lucrative shellfish sector. Pieter Tesch unravels the complexities of one of the biggest fish-catching nations in the world and finds it holding back the tide with some innovative trawling techniques and good sourcing from Mauritania. 01 Oct 2005

India
India is back in seesaw mode as US shrimp tariffs bite and Indian exporters focus again on former markets and seek new ones. The big hope, reports editor Pilar Santamaria, after meeting people in all sectors during a recent visit, is pinned on moves to more added value processing. - Fishing exports from India are going through tough times. India's biggest market, the USA, has recently imposed new duties on Indian shrimp aimed at protecting the domestic American industry from what the US Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) calls "unfair competitors". Since February, Indian exports of shrimp carry an anti-dumping duty of 10.14 per cent with as much as 14.17 per cent in some cases. In addition, each Indian exporter is now required to be formally listed as an "importer of record" in the USA, by furnishing a bond of 10 per cent of the value of their expected exports every year. 25 May 2005

Pakistan
Pakistan is one of many countries in the east wishing to improve its commercial fishing industry. Pilar Santamaria reports - Pakistan's rich fishery resources are not reflected in the export earnings from the fishery sector which has remained stagnant around US$ 150 million during last decade. Pakistan's export stood at US$ 171 million in 1997/98 whereas a rough estimate based on maximum sustainable yield figures set the total export potential to around 1 billion US$ from existing natural resources. In addition, a brief analysis of Pakistan's export in fisheries products reveals over dependence on few species with little value addition. The dependence on a limited number of species causes an imbalance resulting in over exploitation of few and under exploitation of other species. This imbalance is also reflected in fishing grounds with over 99% of landed catch being generated from continental shelf while EEZ contributing less than 1%. 17 Sep 2002
